Subject: Buying Yupiteru MVT-7100 (from ACE Communications?)

I saw an ad in one of the "Buyer's Guide" type magazines that came out
last December, in which ACE Communications advertised the MVT-7100 for
US $399.  I asked them for information a couple of times (by phone and
fax) with no reply.  Then I asked for info from rec.radio.amateur.misc;
the person who commented about ACE Communications detailed return
hassles and said, "I won't do business with ACE."

Unfortunately, the only other place I've heard of the MVT-7100 being
available is Javation, who's charging UK L385, which is way out of my
league.

Can anyone solve my dilemma? Either saying, "I've ordered the
MVT-7100 from ACE and it not only came in two days, but cured my
recurring dreams about space aliens" or, "Order from XYZ Corp.,
instead---they're selling it for $19.95 with the steak knives."
would help me make up my incredibly indecisive mind...

Hello.  I am not sure if this is 100% relevant for this channel, but I figure
that the people that would know anything about the area of my question are
subscribed to this channel.

I am a student here at MIT that is implementing a project to "track" the MIT
shuttles, so that students logged into the network will be able to find out where
it is and when to wait.  In order to do this, I was probably going to use a
numerical code, transmitted using touch-tone (DTMF) encoders and decoders,

In order to do this, however, I would have to use a frequency on which to
transmit.  Thus, this project then finds itself at the hands of the FCC.  I was
wondering if anyone out there knows about the regulations concerning broadcasting
"beeps" over the range of a few square miles in a major city.  This will probably
be a signal in the range of 10^1 kW.  Which regulations apply? How do I find
out about them?  What radio bands would/could I use?  Any
idea as to the efficiency of such transmission?

    Anyway, thanks for listening, and I hope someone out there has both the
answers and the time to write back.

Subject: How's the Kenwood TH-28A?

I am currently using a Kenwood TH-75A HT. This is a dual bander (2m / 440).
It has most of the bells and whistles, but doesn't do some of the
newest stuff, such as paging. It is also large and heavy.

I am considering as a replacement the Kenwood TH-28A. It is only
2m TX, but, frankly, I won't miss 440 (I have used it only a few times
since I have had my radio). It is smaller, lighter, allows paging
and message storage (sort of), has a greater number of freq. memories,
has a shorter, stockier antenna, has the same output power as my
present radio... the list goes on.

If anyone owns a 28A, I would like to hear your comments.
Alternative would also be useful. Money is an object here, however.
The amount I could spend on the new radio could not be much more
than I could get for my old one.

Please post responses if you can...others may want to hear
your suggestions.

I would advise strongly against the MFJ.  I bought one once and was very
dissatisfied with the quality, both of the sound and the workmanship.
Receive audio became distorted at only moderate volume...in order for it
to be clear, you would have to have the volume so low that you would have
to hold it against your ear to hear it over road noise.  Also, the wires
began to break within a few weeks.  I bought a Yaesu and have had years
of good service from it.

It would be great if they were.  That would make life much easier.  The
online repeater directory was started, if you remember, after a discussion
of how one was very desirable but not available.  If this exercise pushes
the ARRL into providing us with an electronic version of the directory then,
in my opinion, the project has achieved its goal.  If they don't do it then
somebody else needs to - and if it requires writing a letter to each of the
coordinating bodies and trying to get them to provide a copy of their list
so we can enter the data and provide the data then so be it.  I would just
like to see somebody provide it in electronic format so that I can use the
nice sorting/searching tools to find what I want without having to wander
through pages and pages of fine print that is not organized in exactly the
way I would like to see it.

It doesn't mean that they have to make a profit on everything, either.  I
don't think that a computer-based directory and the printed directory would
be in competition anyway.  I'd get both.  I have a printed callbook AND a
CD-ROM callbook.  They have different purposes.

That is a terminological inexactitude.  Non-profits have to justify their
tax status.  Non-profit status has an effect on how organizations are run
and what they can do.

Why is Cow so facinated with the type of belt a cop wears? As a fireman
back in Southern California (Orange County) I worked with cops daily
and never took  notice of the type of belt they wore. Kind of weird...
One wonders what other parts of their clothing he has a fixation on.

Foolish. The ships don't xmt on the shore station's frequencies - they
work QSK - full breakin - using seperate frequencies.

Listen during the weather observer reports (OBS) every 6 hours starting
at 0000Z.

You're hearing the CQ tape. I'll list the 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, and 22 MHz
shore calling frequencies, the ship's calling bands, the ship's low-
traffic working bands, and the ship's high-traffic working bands when
I get some time.
